Probable relation of Johannes Matthias Ross, Dutch Governor of Chinsurah (1776-81), earlier bookkeeper at the Chinsurah mint; born and bred in Holland. He entered into contracts with neighbouring merchants like Henry Halsey for supplying the Dutch factory there with coarse clothes, and advanced to him for that purpose a sum of 23,000 on account. Records mention a Sophia Hariett Ross born to J.R Ross and Ruth on 12/12/1846.
